They are the pioneers of the forest as the Birch’s fruit, the strobile dispenses tiny seeds that allow these trees a start even in rocky soil or on a nurse log perhaps provided by one of its ancestors. The birch has adapted well, young trees tolerate extreme environments not only with mighty roots but with trunks that bend with the wind rather than snap in half like other species would.
